It was a long time coming but the 1st XV achieved its first home win in five months on Saturday. After a succession of last-minute disappointments during that time, our reshuffled side tore into Droitwich from the start and we were 4 tries up by the end of the first quarter. The visitors then began to get their act together and scored 4 tries and held their own during the middle section of the game, as we lost a succession of key players to injury, but every time they scored we got one back thanks to strong running through the centre by John Brear and Freddie Spencer and others and we finished the game well on top, winning 61-24. The 2nd XV also had a home game – against Coventrians. We took the opportunity to play a mixed side of Seconds and Colts and included 8 of the younger generation with 3 of them making their senior debuts. Against experienced and weighty opponents our speed and fitness told in the end and we won by 36-27.
On Sunday, the Ladies had another good win, after borrowing a few players from Bournville. They defeated a combined Worcester and Hereford team by 36-33. Sofie Henry scored a hat trick of tries and there was one each for Kate Lawlor, Vicky Merrick and Ellie Harris.
Also on Sunday, the Under 15 side beat Bromsgrove 31-12
This week is yet another free week in the league programme before we play the final round of fixtures on 5 April, when we are away at Evesham. The week after that we are due to play away at Bugbroke, near Northampton in the first round of the Papa John Trophy
The big game this week is the Colts who are playing in the Warwickshire Cup semi-final at Old Leamingtonians, at their place, kicking off at 7.30.
On Sunday the U15 are at home to Kenilworth and the minis are at home to Long Buckby
The main issues in our league have now been resolved with Luctonians promoted and Old Coventrians, who pipped Luctonians by a point on Saturday in second place and likely to go into a play-off for promotion. After our promising start to the season, followed by a long losing run, it is surprising that we have kept clear of the relegation zone and we will finish 7th or 8th depending how we do at Evesham.
Ray Ward’s funeral is on Monday 31 March, at St Mary Magdalen Church, Lillington, at 1.30. The burial (to be attended by family only) will be at 2.30 and everyone is invited to the Rugby Club
Playing KIT - A lot of playing and leisure kit has been left in the home changing rooms unclaimed and is accumulating. We will be starting the renovation of the changing rooms shortly and this kit needs to be removed. If it is yours and you wish to reclaim anything please do so by Tuesday 1 April or it will be disposed of.
