History of LRFC 4 of 36

4. 1930 to 1931

With his thumb repaired, Basil Jones (left) became captain with Cliff Harrison his vice-captain. We continued to make progress and this was our best season so far, with more wins than losses for the first time. New recruits included: Dr David Parfitt a very good centre who had played for Cardiff; W.W. Brown, Peter Drinkwater-Strong and A.L. Flay who were also more than useful centres; and there was a very good wing three-quarter called J.M. Kenchington. His brother F.W. Kenchington, G.A. Usher, Les Coles, Arthur Ogden and Tom Commander added to the forwards. Other reinforcements included Alan Talbot, who was a founder member and an excellent forward who had returned from Palestine. We started to run three teams in spite of the fact that Old Warwickians had now come into being and were competing with us for players and the old boys of Leamington College were now raising scratch sides to play our second XV, calling themselves the Old Collegians. They founded the Old Leamingtonians Club the following season. 17 January was a milestone, as all three teams won for the first time. The first XV, with only 14 men, beat the newly formed Old Warwickians 11-3 to complete a double over them. The second XV beat Old Warwickians by 25-3 and the third XV beat Leamington College 3-0.

We lost a number of good players as a result of the establishment of the Old Warwickians as well as a source of new members. The same problem was to hit us with the birth of Old Leamingtonians. The formation of both of these clubs came about in a similar way. When we were without a fixture we tended to play a scratch side of old boys of the two schools and this gave them the idea that they had enough players to form regular clubs of their own, just as we had when some of our players had travelled to Kenilworth. Whilst the growth in clubs increased competition for good players it also increased the opportunities for people to play and helped develop the game generally.
